SKSE Certification has been a long time in the coming and its creation is the result of a Director of a Leading Spas of the World property asking for special recognition for the numerous efforts and changes they were making once we began working with them. But SKSE’s story really begins with the unprecedented number of Asian and non-standard salons that have diminished the value of our services. Having caused numerous infections and outbreaks in consumers who visit their nail salons. Having diminished the value through cheap and unrealistic pricing that the normal American can not make a living on. And with beauty schools having inadequate or irrelevant information taught with the end goal of just making sure someone who probably shouldn’t have a license passes a state board test. Because of this, our area of the industry is not viewed as that important, not expected to keep up with education and not expected to be as profitable as it could be.
However, as much as the non-standard market dominates the tragic happenings of the nail industry and are largely responsible for the bad press, all spas and licensees are to be held accountable. I don’t make it a habit to patronize businesses who don’t speak my language and I certainly don’t make it a habit to spend time in one that is laden with toxic products and poor sanitization that would have an impact by my merely being in their and breathing. But I have walked into numerous 5-star properties and seen things that just shouldn’t be. I have spoken to team members who haven’t the first clue what I am talking about with things that seem so basic in manicuring. And when it comes to understanding my unique needs that require special treatment protocols, they are not educated to know how to handle them. Sadly I have found that few licensee’s understand simple mechanics of treatments, how health affects our hands, feet and nails and how easily and within the scope of licensing it can be addressed. And none, even decision makers, have adequate information about products used and retailed because marketing is powerful no matter how deceptive. Sixteen years in the industry wearing many titles and seeing many things, and having many conversations stands behind the creation of SKSE Certification and the journey to restore the health and value of hand and foot care in the spa industry because it is more than just fluff.
